On May 12, 2017, at 11:30am, volunteers with Shmira of Boro Park returned 96 sacred texts worth over $400,000, to the Beth Hamedrash Ma'asei Rokeach D'Kozlov synagogue, in Brooklyn, NY, after it was stolen slightly over a month ago. Shmira of Boro Park presented the sacred texts to Rabbi Rokeach and his family, at the synagogue located on 12th Avenue and 55th Street in the Boro Park section of Brooklyn, NY.
The return of these sacred texts is the result of a meticulous investigation conducted by NYPD detectives, in collaboration with volunteers from Shmira of Boro Park. During the course of the investigation, Shmira volunteers learned that some of the stolen texts were shipped outside of the United States. Following extensive negotiations with unidentified persons affiliated with the heist, Shmira was able to secure the return of all the stolen texts. None of the items have been damaged during the heist.
Levi Y. Leifer, the director of Shmira of Boro Park who led the investigation for Shmira, stated: "We are thrilled to have recovered and returned these sacred and valuable texts to the rightful owners. None of this would have been possible without the incredible work by detectives from the New York City Police Department, as well as assemblyman Dov Hikind who made this investigation their top priority, and worked around the clock to secure the return of the items."
Chesky Biller, Coordinator of Shmira of Boro Park said I am very proud of our volunteers who gave away so much of their own time to make sure all the books were returned to their rightful owner.
